Silom Thai Cooking School

One of the things we love about travelling is all of the different food and dishes we get to try. We’ve had some amazing food, but also some incredibly bad food on our travels (that one’s another story!). One country’s food that we just couldn’t get enough of was Thailand’s and the thought that we wouldn’t be able to get this back in the UK was far too upsetting for us! So we decided to do a cooking class so that we could replicate all of these beautiful dishes at home and also to learn more about the ingredients and the Thai culture as well.

I did a lot of research online from Trip Advisor to various blogs and Silom Thai Cooking School in Bangkok had the most incredible reviews and recommendations. In exchange for this blog post and the video below, Silom Thai Cooking School were kind enough to give us a free class so that we could tell you all about it! Even though we were given this class for free all opinions expressed are of course our own, we were under no obligation to give them a good review (spoiler alert – it was awesome!). So let’s get ‘cooking’ we are going to share will you our full experience from booking the class, all the way to leaving happy with stomachs full of delicious Thai food!

Silom Thai Cooking School Bangkok

Silom Thai Cooking School is known for providing an authentic, home style, Thai cooking experience. There are many different courses to pick from at different times which can be found on their website here. Our course included 5 dishes, including a salad, soup, curry, noodle dish and a dessert. Perfect! What’s even better is that the morning and afternoon class includes a trip to the market too. Unfortunately, as it is in the evening, the evening class is unable to go to the market as it would be closed but you don’t miss out as you still get to learn about all of the ingredients in class. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give them an email, the service is incredible and they are quick to respond and go out of their way to make your experience with them as great as possible.

Getting Ingredients From the Market

We got emailed some very detailed directions for the meeting point and being just off the BTS in Bangkok it was easy to find. Once all of the group were together we set off for the market just 5 minutes down the road. We were each given a basket and bottle of water and our teacher guided us around the market to pick out our ingredients. Every ingredient was explained to us, it was the right level of interesting and fun and we learned a lot, from what Thai spices are used for, to how to pick the freshest shrimp. Very informative!

Where do we cook?

The cooking school is split into 3 different areas. The first area is where we eat (yum!) and also where we can leave our things. The decoration was beautiful and it felt so homely (plus it was all air conditioned too). There were also lockers there where you can put you can safely lock up your belongings. You are also given an apron too, just in case you’re like me and always make a mess when you cook! The other room was the preparation room. We all sat around on the floor on cushions as this way is the traditional Thai way to prepare food. The third place is outside and this is where we actually cooked the food. Just one wok and a spatula on a gas fire, simple!

The Experience!

The actual experience of this cooking class in Thailand was incredible, it was everything I wanted it to be and more! Our teacher made the lesson so fun but at the same time she kept it very interesting and informative. She spoke perfect English and we got along so well! I learned so much from how to make coconut milk to the best way to cook noodles. I really have taken so much knowledge away from this lesson and I can’t wait to start cooking some of these dishes at home! We were each also given a recipe book which includes all of the dishes we made today. What I really loved about this class was that the food we made was catered toward us and our tastebuds. As everyone has their own ingredients and cooks their own dishes we could choose how spicy we wanted it, or to not include any ingredients we didn’t like, or to choose the vegetarian option, there really was so much freedom, I was pleasantly surprised. What makes it even better, is that after each meal we could sit down and eat it, I was so full by the time we got out, you could have rolled me home!

So let’s get to it, here are the 5 dishes that I made, so easy and quick to make and they all tasted incredible, if I do say so myself!

1). Chicken Salad. So simple yet so tasty!
2). Tom Yum (Traditional Thai Soup – with prawns)
3). Pad Thai (Thai noodle dish and Nathan’s favourite!) 
4) Thai Green Curry (my favourite dish EVER!)
5). Mango and Coconut Sticky Rice (the dish you never want to end!)

I hope I have inspired you to go and take a cooking course in Thailand to make some of this beautiful food yourself! I cannot recommend Silom Thai Cooking School enough, they provided the most interesting, fun class. It really was an amazing experience and great to learn some more about the Thai culture through their food!

    A cooking course is such a fun way to get to know the country. I did one in Chiang Mai, Thailand and one in Ubud, Bali.
