Afternoon Tea in London

12 Jan, 2018 | Blog, England

Afternoon tea, can you think of anything more British? This blog is all about our Afternoon Tea at Restaurant 92 in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel West End. We’ll be giving you a bit of a background into just what Afternoon tea is, what it was all like, and where to get your tickets.

We’ve partnered with Headout to bring you this blog. In return for this review we were supplied with tickets free of charge, as always though any thoughts and opinions are entirely our own. This blog will also include affiliate links, at no cost to you, but we will receive a small commission if anything is purchased via the links, this helps us greatly with running the site.

So just what is Afternoon Tea? It’s typically eaten around 3-5pm and is a light meal consisting of sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries, and of course tea. For extra special occasions, sometimes you can even get it with a glass of champagne too! There’s a surprising amount of history around Afternoon Tea, it started in Britain in the early 1840’s. It initially started as a private event for women who were interested in climbing the social ladders, but eventually developed into tea receptions on much larger scales involving up to 200 people! Nowadays, Afternoon Tea is used to celebrate special occasions like birthdays or baby showers, or for me just an occasional indulgence. Afternoon Tea is one of my favourite things to do, so I like to think of myself as somewhat an expert in divulging in it, and being in London it was an extra special treat!

Our Review of Afternoon Tea at the Hilton

We arrived at the Hilton nearly 20 minutes early (we were just too excited!), they were so accommodating and were able to seat us straight away. Whilst our food was prepared we were served with our tea, the teapot and teacups were beautiful and so dainty. It all felt very fancy, which was perfect as that’s exactly what Afternoon Tea is supposed to be, it was certainly different to my morning cup of tea I have in bed!

Then came the food and Champagne! The tier was stunning and who doesn’t love a good glass of Champagne. We were so excited to get involved, so we chinked our Champagne flutes and dug in.

The variety of finger sandwiches were phenomenal, a mixture of smoked salmon with cream cheese, ham, cucumber, and hummus with peppers. The bread was soft and you could tell that these were freshly prepared, just delicious. It’s important to note that everything came in two’s, which was perfect for both of us, we split everything down the middle with no arguments on who got what cake or sandwich.

After this we had warm scones with clotted cream and jam that were amazing! It’s so important when having scones that they are warm and freshly baked, we love a good scone and of course when covered in clotted cream and strawberry jam they’re near on unbeatable.

Then last, but definitely not least was the selections of cakes. They were so pretty and delicate, almost too good to eat. Almost being the key word. The selection was really varied as well, we enjoyed every one!

I loved every moment of our experience at the Hilton from when we walked in, to the moment I finished my last sip of champagne. The atmosphere was so classy, yet relaxing and the service was excellent. This was definitely one of my favourite ever Afternoon Tea experiences and the food and drink exceeded all of my expectations. I highly recommend this experience for anyone looking to try something traditionally British or for someone who just wants to indulge in something delicious, you will not be disappointed.
